Step flashing consists of individual L-shaped metal pieces installed one per shingle course along the roof-to-wall transition. It is the most critical flashing type for preventing sidewall water infiltration.
Counter flashing is installed into a reglet (a horizontal cut in masonry) above the step flashing and overlaps it. The combination creates a two-part waterproofing system at chimney and wall transitions.
Valley flashing is installed in the roof valley where two roof planes meet.
