What Fascia and Soffit Do

Fascia is the horizontal board that runs along the lower edge of the roof, directly behind the gutter. It provides the structural attachment point for the gutter system and closes the gap between the roof deck edge and the exterior wall.

Soffit is the finished surface on the underside of the roof overhang, between the fascia and the exterior wall. It closes the eave against pest entry and, in vented form, provides the intake air pathway for attic ventilation.

When either component fails, 3 consequences follow: pest entry into the attic space, gutter detachment from a rotted fascia board, and attic ventilation deficiency that raises attic temperatures and accelerates shingle deterioration.

Signs of Fascia or Soffit Damage

Material Options

Wood fascia accepts paint well and is repairable in sections but is the most vulnerable to moisture damage. Aluminum fascia wrap is maintenance-free, does not rot, and is XRoofing's recommended replacement choice. Vinyl soffit is the current standard for new residential construction, available in vented and non-vented configurations.

Soffit Venting and Attic Ventilation

Vented soffit is the intake component of a balanced attic ventilation system. When soffit vents are blocked, attic temperatures rise 20 to 40 degrees above properly ventilated equivalents, directly reducing shingle lifespan and potentially voiding manufacturer warranties.

Can I have just the fascia replaced without replacing the gutters?

Yes. In most cases, XRoofing removes the existing gutters, replaces the fascia, and reinstalls the original gutters if they are in serviceable condition.
